Fashion magazine evaluation

Mag cover ps.jpg

For my magazine, I researched the conventions of real products and what they contain highlighting that my magazine has both conventional and unconventional aspects within it. My magazine has many of the typical conventions such as the masthead in big writing positioned behind my model so that it doesn't cover her. This does suggest that my magazine is well known and therefore doesn’t need all of the masthead being presented and that people would already know the name.

For my main image my shot type was a mid shot and the subject featured on the front as she is also within the double page spread and discussed in further detail. I ensured that my magazine had a barcode, date and issue number as this is always found on a magazine cover and never left off. As a barcode is a typical convention I did keep it on my front cover, however decided to rotate and turn it on its side facing the left as i thought it made it look slightly more interesting and unconventional.  it A subversive element about my magazine is that my subject isn't found with direct address with is a common convention on a magazine, however is not always used. I purposefully did this as I thought the image was nicer itself but not only this, as I am writing about a new out coming fashion designer, I found that as a reader it makes you want to know more about her and read the double page spread as she looks slightly more mysterious.

I would personally prefer my magazine to be advertised and manufactured as a print magazine and not of a digital format as it generally makes more revenue than digital versions. This is because of the value of money from the advertisement is much higher on print magazines than on digital ones. I would expect some of same conventions to be displayed on both versions however some slight differences also shown. For example, the obvious difference, the different format. As Well as this it is considered that digital magazines are more relevant to a younger target audience as their are more involved with technology and have the digital format with them on their phone for example meaning they do not need to physically carry it around with them. In my opinion, I prefer print magazines as they are traditional and and still give you that sense of escapism  but in a physical manner. The buzz word is quite small and hidden away further towards the corner of the magazine as it is something you wouldn't want to show off as much as other things as it is could be considered expensive for a magazine. I chose to have it as this price as it links to the masthead and implies that a wealthy audience may want to purchase this magazine. On the other hand it could also interest other consumers who want luxury and wealth. The sell line ‘ 50 new trends you should try’ is a technique I have use to make a reader feel they are getting something that no one else has and that it is something special.

The target audience for my magazine would 16-24 as It will definitely appeal to younger audiences and viewers interested in fashion who will look up to her. It will almost create an inspirational view of themselves and what they see themselves doing in the future. I would say that this magazine has a wider target audience and spreads to consumers of up to the age of  24. This can be observed by the link with the masthead and the target audience as the name ‘Opulence’ symbolises luxuriousness and having wealth. This could link to both the younger and older generation as as they both have the most amount of disposable income. It doesn’t only need to relate to consumers with a lot of wealth but also to those who are aspiring to become of wealth and live in that sort of lifestyle. I chose to have the name ‘Opulence’ to be set out the way it is as creates a very elegant and interesting touch to it because of the way it fades around her head instead of sitting solidly behind her. I made sure that the colours were coordinating with what the subject was wearing and the colour of her hair but also considering that I shouldn't use too many different colours which is why I have stuck to my main colours red, white, black and grey which isn’t as noticeable. This is established by the way the the cover lines match the masthead and don’t distract you from anything else. This is the same with the models name ‘Jasmin Coles’ which is chose to keep the same colour so that it linked to the masthead but in addition to this, I didn’t want it to clash with the black hair so white was my best option. I used the strapline at the bottom of the magazine as ‘Red carpet insiders’ as I thought it would attract attention and make a reader feel like they are gaining something extra by buying this magazine and having something exclusive. The name of the model could be used as anchorage text as it relates to the main image and so that they can interact so that it almost labels the image with the big font used.

I decided to keep the front cover more simple and not have as much writing as some covers present as I wanted to keep it looking not too over cluttered which links well to the name of the magazine and makes it seem elegant.

The title of my double page spread ‘How it started’ was used to interest a reader and attract them to the back story of how a celebrity got her fame. This would attract consumers as it is an insight to inform them on how they could progress in their lives as she even gives advice on how to cope and increase motivation. I chose to have her speaking in the first person so that a consumer would feel more connected to her and feel close to her. I kept the theme of the double page spread similar to the front cover o that they relate to one another and intrigue and audience member to find out more about her. I chose to add two images of her as i think they work well together as there is one of her looking away and one with direct address. The direct address is important in this photo as it creates a relationship between the reader and the model and as I didn’t portray this on my front cover I thought it would be a nice detail to instead poetry on the double page spread. There is a smaller picture presented as well which is of her hometown and where she grew up which is think creates a nice effect for the presentation and makes it more personal. The quote ‘ I didn’t let my obstacles stop me’ is very important and is relates to what she is talking about within the text where she talks about how she overcame these obstacles. This would make a reader feel very uplifted as she is presenting a very positive mood towards the audience.

From my responses it displayed that 100% of them like fashion magazines meaning that I can make this magazine cover knowing it is something that definitely interests people. Most of them also said that they are quite likely to buy a fashion magazine. Although most people responded as to buying fashion magazines, the facts show that they wouldn't read them that often. This highlights that print magazines can easily be left around and neglected, therefore I used this information to make sure I make my cover as intriguing as I could to chosen target audience so that i could challenge that. From the survey I discovered that the audience's attention is most easily captivated by the model displayed as the subject on the front cover. This is generally the most important part to consider on a cover as is what I would argue a consumer would first notice about a magazine cover. The masthead and the models outfit choice is also considered important just not as crucial as the main image and therefore I spent more time deciding which image to chose and experimented with which one looked better than for example what the magazine was going to be called. In my opinion I think that most people would rather have a traditional print magazine rather than a digital version and this is supported by the fact that 75% of people would rather have a print version on the survey. The reasoning they have given is states that they consider it easier as you just grab it and buy it whereas online you have to put in your details. It is also used to kill time which implies the idea of escapism and getting away from reality. For this reason On my double page spread I included some details on where the model is from and an image to support so they feel as if they are in this place and have experienced being there themselves. This creates a sort of subliminal cut and provokes the image in your head of her hometown.  Most of my responses came from people of an age of 14-17 implying they are mostly interested in these sorts of magazines. All of my responses came from females and although it would have been helpful to have a male, my target audience is directed at females and therefore is not as important.

The only thing I would like to improve in terms of giving people this survey to complete is printing it out as I didn’t receive as much feedback as I had hoped and if I had given them a physical print version I believe I would have received more feedback. If I could re do this task, I would have tried to explore more with keeping the texture of the models hair on Photoshop. I believe this would have made it have look more realistic and less of a straight line so that the the extra strands of hair could be seen.
